History of AACLS
With a long history spanning several decades, the ASEAN Association of Clinical Laboratory Sciences (AACLS), originally known as the ASEAN Association of Medical Laboratory Technologists (AAMLT), was founded. This association is essential to the advancement of clinical laboratory science in the ASEAN area.
Official representatives from Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand established the ASEAN Association of Medical Laboratory Technologists (AAMLT), a formal organization of ASEAN MLTs, in 1985, during the 10th Anniversary of the Malaysian Society of Medical Laboratory Technologists (MSMLT), now known as MIMLS.
The goal of the AAMLT’s founding in April 1985 was to unite medical laboratory technologists from various ASEAN nations. Its main goals were to promote cooperation, share expertise, and raise the level of medical laboratory technology in the area. The agreement was signed at the University of Malaya’s Faculty of Medicine in Kuala Lumpur at the inaugural ASEAN Conference on Medical Laboratory Technology.
The first ASEAN Conference in Medical Laboratory Technology (ACMLT) was the name of the 1985 conference. The Pro-tem Committee was formed, with Malaysian R. Saminathan as its chairman. The co-chairmen of the group were Modh Bakri Hj Isa of Malaysia, Henry Lee Siew Kheong of Malaysia, Harun Pudin of Brunei Darussalam, Abdul Hakim Rahman of Indonesia, Carmencita Acedera of the Philippines, Lersuang Chavanich of Thailand, and Kamarudin Bin Ali of Singapore, who was chosen in absentia. The AAMLT’s goals and structure were set by the Pro-tem Committee.
In November 1986, PAMET hosted the second ACMLT in Manila, Philippines. The first Biennial General Meeting of Delegates (BGM) in Manila saw the preparation and adoption of the AAMLT Constitution. In 2006, it was revised during the tenth Biennial General Meeting. It was also decided during the conference that the member country associations will alternately host the upcoming ACMLTs.
AAMLT was legally associated with ASEAN in November 1993 during the first meeting of the 27th ASEAN Standing Committee, which took place in Bangkok, Thailand.
The group expanded in stature and impact over time. The AAMLT changed its name to the ASEAN Association of Clinical Laboratory Scientists (AACLS) in 2006. during the 11th ACMLT in Jakarta on May 23, 2006, at the 11th biannual general meeting. This shift was a reflection of how the field was developing and how crucial clinical laboratory scientists were becoming to the medical field.
Clinical laboratory scientists can now network, exchange best practices, and keep up with industry developments by using the AACLS as a platform. Professionals can improve their knowledge and abilities by attending conferences, workshops, and seminars that the organization hosts.
The development of standardized guidelines and protocols for clinical laboratory practices is one of the main AACLS strategies. By ensuring that laboratories throughout the ASEAN area follow high standards, these rules enhance patient safety and care.
The AACLS actively fosters research and development in clinical laboratory science by collaborating with other international organizations and institutions. The organization aids in the development of the discipline and the enhancement of healthcare outcomes through promoting partnerships and research.
The AACLS has had a significant influence on the development of clinical laboratory science in the ASEAN area by its commitment to quality and ongoing professional growth. It still serves as a catalyst for the advancement of the field and guarantees the greatest caliber and professionalism in clinical laboratory procedures.
